The 8th “So Bad, It’s Good” Blogathon–Batman & Robin (1997)

This is from “The Apple” (1980). This film is terrible and I could not find any entertainment in it. It was just stupid, and not in a good way.
Alicia Silverstone, George Clooney, and Chris O’Donnell
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Uma Thurman
Poison Ivy is easily the best part of this film.
“Let’s kick some ice!” is easily my favorite of Mr. Freeze’s ice puns.
A laughably terrible fight sequence between Ivy and Batgirl.
A consistent motif throughout the film.

Fun review!

I have a complicated relationship with Batman. Love the Adam West stuff but hated Tim Burton’s first movie. However, I love Batman Returns, mainly thanks to Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman!  Then Batman Forever happened and I didn’t enjoy it at all.

Many, many years later, I finally decided to watch  Batman & Robin.  Right away, as you noted, I realized Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy  was easily the best part of this movie, but I was enjoying the absolute ridiculousness of everything going on!  It was so campy that it took me back to Adam West, which is probably why I actually enjoy Batman & Robin more than Batman Forever.

Nowadays though, I consider The Lego Batman Movie my favorite Batman film!

This is a great review. I laughed out loud reading Mr Freeze’s dialogue with an Arnold Schwarzenegger voice. Too funny!

Also, thank you for writing about this film, and sparing us all the trouble of seeing it.

I loved Arnold’s portrayal in this. His scripted one-liners were basically just the natural progression from the plethora of previous one-liners in other movies, so it didn’t bother me. I would have considered it a failure if Arnold DIDN’T have any cheesy one-liners. Good review.

Hot take: We should have stopped the Batman franchise after the 60s TV series. Nothing could top that for pure camp. The “cartoon bubble” sound-effects were the best!

I was one of those fans who was very skeptical of Michael Keaton as Batman, but was completely won over by Tim Burton’s darker tone. I also remember thoroughly enjoying Batman Forever. Saw Batman and Robin once and that was enough. Somehow, the over-the-top camp worked for Adam West and Burt Ward, but with this crew it was just embarrassing. Still, the villains and their groaner one liners are guilty fun if you completely turn off any semblance of critical faculties.
