I didn’t know that Olivia didn’t involve Joan in their mother’s memorial service and didn’t even invite her! Yikes!

I like them both a lot, but if I *had* to pick a favorite, it would probably be Joan Fontaine. Her acting was ahead of its time with a real spontaneous quality without seeming out of place in the movies of the era. I love her in REBECCA, IVY and even THE CONSTANT NYMPH (although you have to suspend disbelief a bit to accept Joan as a 14-year-old in that one).

I think I would agree with you. While I said in my article that I like both, if I had to pick a favorite, I would also pick Joan. Merely for the simple fact that she appeared in more of the types of films I like to watch. I would agree with you re: her acting style. I just watched Something to Live For where Joan plays someone on the verge of full fledged alcoholism and she was really good.

Informative and entertaining thoughts on the feud between Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine! Now I hope Ryan Murphy does a season of Feud all about their intense rivalry! I think it would be obsessively watchable!

To me, it sounds like Joan and Olivia just hated each other from Joan’s birth basically. I got Joan’s memoir which was described online as “delightfully bitchy.” I look forward to reading it. Though, I do think that Joan and Olivia had mutual respect for each other’s achievements and careers, they just weren’t friendly. I don’t think either ever wished any ill harm to the other.
